Very Rare, Mimbres Floral Polychrome
Bowl
Ca. 950 AD - 1300 AD
Description: A fabulously executed Mimbres polychrome bowl. One
of the rarest of all Mimbres pottery the polychrome accounts for less than
1% of all Mimbres in existence. Mimbres are well known for their
pictorial bowls, but the polychromes are much more rare. The geometric design is a fabulous example of bold
and fine line interlocking motifs with two floral patterns coming from the
center. Mimbres is one of the most recognizable and valuable
of all the south west pottery. The Mimbres seem to have developed
from Mogollon culture, as there are clear connections between the early
pottery and house types. The people grew corn and beans, and were also
hunters and gatherers. Villages consisted of small pithouse or pueblo
groupings, and usually had a small rectangular ceremonial structure known as
a kiva. The most common burial practices intramural inhumation.
Unlike the Mogollon, who often buried numerous vessels with their dead, the
Mimbres usually provided only a single bowl, ritually "killed" by punching a
hole in the bottom to release the spirit.
Legally purchased from a private collection, legal release and disclosure
accompanies the piece.

slight paint enhancement just around the kill hole, not effecting the
polychrome

Detailed face on the bird body showing whiskers, it was common to have
multiple animal effigies on a ducks body. The "nose" represents a human

likely done intentionally to kill the vessel. The vessel is in perfect

Great Mimbres Geometric Black on White
Bowl
Ca. 950 AD - 1300 AD
Description: A fabulously executed Mimbres black on white bowl.
This bowl shows a large flower with perfect floating triangle designs. The
ultra fine painted lines have dark triangles floating with in the motifs.
This is one of the cleanest geometric bowls I have ever seen, almost
perfectly round. A wonderful kill hole set in the center of the bowl. This
was intentionally done to release the bowls spirit. You can see where the
ancients attempted to kill the bowl and caused a single small pin hole, then
struck it a second time to complete the kill. Mimbres is one of the most recognizable and valuable
of all the south west pottery. The Mimbres seem to have developed
from Mogollon culture, as there are clear connections between the early
pottery and house types. The people grew corn and beans, and were also
