Ca. 700 AD - 1400 AD
Description: A rare, solid Mexico, Huastec Head. This great sculpture is very rare in the fact that it is a solid made sculpture and not the typical hollow mold made type. This detailed male has his mouth open exposing his well detailed teeth. His nose is realistically sculpted and ears pierced. This is a virtual snapshot to what the pre Aztec culture people looked like. Mounted on antique Lucite base from the original collection.
The Huastec people lived to the north of the Gulf of Mexico coast. They were organized into small warlike states, but were annihilated and replaced by the Aztecs from 1400 AD onwards. Statues were found inside the temples, in towns that had a ceremonial centers. When they were female the power of fertility was attributed to them, whilst when they were male and endowed with rich ornaments, they were accorded a military virtue.
