Ca. 900 AD – 1100 AD
Description: One of the rarest of the Southwest artifacts the Hohokam human effigies almost never come up for sale. The majority of these pieces are typically just bodiless heads (The attached pictures is the only collection of Arizona State Museum). Little is known about these small clay humans, several fragmentary examples were excavated at Snaketown in the 1930's. See "Excavations at Snaketown" Haury ISBN#65-23304 starting at page 245. The majority of these figures are that of females leading most Archeologists to believe they are similar in religious beliefs as the Mother Goddess figures in the Middle East, Egypt, Rome and Meso-America.
These figures never have arms as they were pinned on with small sticks. They all have the elongated "Katchina" like facial features, exposed breasts, slit eyes and mouth and are usually just buff fired silt or tempered clay. This group comes from one very well documented Arizona collection and is the only group we have ever handled.
The buyers of these pieces must agree that Knox Artifacts Gallery has the right to publish these images in an upcoming book on the Mother Goddess figures. Each will have a custom steel stand made for them.
