Ca. 900 AD - 1200 AD
Description: A very rare Hohokam slate stone pallet. This extremely rare form is likely a stylized bird in flight if viewed mounted horizontally. During the excavations at Snaketown a nearly exact pallet was found, see “Excavations at Snaketown” Plate C item B. They categorize it as “An eccentric, border and edges grooved and notched.” This one’s edges are carved in a basket pattern. There are only two known examples of this style in the world, the one at Snaketown and this one. One of the finest Hohokam lithics we have ever handled. Heavy deposits on the surface. Hohokam pallets often referred to as “Paint pallets”. Most archeologist believe that these were used as more of a snuff pallet for ceremonial uses than used as a paint pallet. This collection comes from a very well documented collection. Complete provenance will be released upon purchase. Legally purchased from a private collection. Mounted on custom steel stand.
